South Hunsley Catering
Over the past three years the school has worked with students, parents and staff to provide healthier and more nutritious meals, whilst still offering varied and popular menu choices.
The Government have introduced new guidelines for school catering, which have been in place since September 2006. The guidelines are intended to improve the diet of children and include:-
- No confectionery to be available at lunchtimes
- No bagged savoury snacks
- No salted condiments
- Deep fried products restricted to no more than once a week
- Limited processed foods
- More fruit and vegetables
- More oily fish
- The only drinks to be served should be water, pure fruit juces, milk and milk drinks and smoothies
We are proud of the fact that we removed confectionary, carbonated high sugar drinks and had substantially reduced the use of deep fried and processed foods from our menus, long before the new government regulations were issued.
Our fruit, vegetables and meat and dairy products are locally sourced, offering us a wide choice in which to vary our menus and introduce the students to different tastes and textures.

Healthy Eating - Nutritional Guidelines
Over the next term we will be setting up a School Nutrition Action Group (SNAG) involving students, parents, caterers, staff and health professionals, so that the whole school is involved with taking the healthy schools initiative forward.
Parents will be invited to speak to the catering staff on parents evenings to offer suggestions or voice any concerns regarding any of aspects of the school meals service offered at South Hunsley, including the opportunity to sample some of the menu options available to our students.
All catering staff hold a certificate in Nutrition Awareness with senior members holding a Diploma.
